What in the world is going on here? This boat was sold on ebay last month. Then it appeared again a week ago (as per other thread). Bidding was going well and got up to about $7K two days ago, with ~5 days to go. Now I see the auction has started all over again ($2.9K) with 9 days to go ????

Directly from the first line of the new auction:
"HAD TO RELIST AS PER EBAY (KEY WORD INFRACTION)"

Wonder why though. Who's 'infraction' - seller's? bidder's ebay's? Remember this was the auction that already finished 'successfully' and there was some discussion in the other thread about an off-line communication from seller to one of our members who was a loosing bidder. Then, in the second auction another of our forum members had to retract a bid because he couldn't get seller to email himback ... it's all kinda odd, and might make me a bit hesitant about bidding. _________________ Neil Quigley

He listed the ITEM WRONG in the title by mentioning other boat companies. He mentioned this in the first line and again at the bottom in the questions section. EBay removed the item because he had the "key word" infraction in title by mentioning "not a Catalina or Hunter" etc. The first auction appears to have been a BACK OUT from the high bidder. Personally, I wouldnt write this boat off yet due to these circumstances.

I was interested in bidding on this boat. I sent and received an e-mail reply. However the seller advertises that he is selling this boat for someone else. When I asked if he had the legal authority to sell and sign over the boat, no reply.
I'm curious to see what happens with this boat.
Looking for a fin keel boat, preferably in New England |

I don't think he can by Ebay rules, but people seem to get around the rules.
The bid is up to $4,550. There are several first time bidders. That's probably not too unusual. You might want to think what is the most you would be willing to pay for the boat and bid. If you get it, great. If you place a winning bid, I think he has to honor it.
I'm also curious to see what happens. Let us know what you find out. |

That's my usual approach for eBay in general. Works for me. _________________ Ex-235 Owner

the thing that concens me is,
1. he causually mentions the fact that the headiner needs repair and
2. the pics don't show the condition of the headliner. |

When all is said and done, almost ALL F235 will need headliner repair or replacement sooner or later. I dont know of a single one that has not had to be either re-glued or totally removed to get the dreaded "Black Death" out of the picture. The glue used by Beneteau interacts with heat and humidity and eats away the foam backing, dissolving it over time. It's part of the price for owning the F235. It can also be used as bargaining power depending on whether it's been done yet.

Very true. The headliner is a foam backed vinyl that is going to fall down some time. Some have had luck re-glueing the pieces back. There is info on the First 235 web site about replacement and in some threads here. I think I remember someone quoting the price for the complete set of new liner panels from Beneteau at around $500 to $800. They have to be ordered can come from France. Others have saved the pieces, bought the material and used the old pieces as patterns. The good news for those in the north, someone on the board discovered that the glue gets brittle in the dead of winter and can be scraped off! It's kind of like putting ice on gum :-)
I think using wood instead of vinyl or carpet would be great. |

Thanks all for the comments. I had made initial contact with someone in NJ who could send a professional to look at the boat for me. BUT, I'm not inclined to send money to a seller 4 states distant who will not reply as to whether or not he has the legal authority to sell a boat registered in yet another state (PA). I don't need that hassle right now.
I also note that our e-mail exchange, which ended with that question, is not included in the e-bay listing. Anyone have any thoughts?
I will use your kind advice as I continue to look for another fin keel F235, and pray that whoever gets the boat has a good experience. |

Makes sense to me, you have to go with your feelings on this one.
I'm sure there is a Fin F235 out there waiting for you. |

I'm also interested in this boat and had a quick look at it last weekend - it's at Curtin Marina near Philly. I've been looking for a Liberty Cup 235 in exc cond for a while, but this boat isn't one of them and I'd rate it about 6.5/10.
Certainly echo mccalack's sentiments regarding liner and his authority to sell (he told me he had the state rego papers) but I also worry about any water damage on bulkheads (yes, I know all 235s have a little bit). Overall the photos fairly accurately reflect the exterior, but the trailor didn't look quite as good in real life.
I really wanted to look at the inside, but couldn't connect with the seller as planned and gave up.
One thing that puzzled me was that the seller said if it didn't get a good enough bid, he would list it through a broker. I guess that means he isn't compelled to accept the ebay bid?? Hard to explain, but I'm just a little too uncomfortable with this one.

Why a Liberty Cup 235? So far, I havent seen many things to set it apart to exclude others besides a logo, plate, and sail cover. You know something we don't know about it?

The keel mainly. I'm biased towards the fin because it is a better setup for racing - about 50 kg lighter (~100lb), better stability and superior pointing. I'm also a little biased because the first boat I saw was a LC and I regret not getting it - but I had only seen one 235 at the time and didn't know enough about the boat back then.
Anyway, "Quixotic" is the only fin keel boat I've seen that is not a LC, has been (past tense) set up for racing, is fairly close to where I live (NJ), but is not really in excellent condition. I'm nervous about the circumstances too. but it is still tempting ...
I'm also intrigued by the lead keel design you posted on this website, so I'm not 100% against a WK235 in exc condition.
BTW Kelly, also want to congratulate you on this suberb website.

Mccalack apparently bought Quixotic and is off to get her. Hope it all works out.

There is a story in there some where. I bet the trailer' wheel bearings and/or tires had something to do with it.
I'm glad you are safely home. |

Well you are right. The worse problem came from the fact that I stayed in a hotel that had a "red-neck" bar attached to it.(Ramada Inn) Apparently someone thought it would be funny to loosen the bolts on one of my wheels. The next morning, I looked the trailer over, the bolts were there, but I did not realize they were loose. About 45 mins later, I heard a strange noise, looked in the left rear-view mirror in time to see the wheel shoot off(not fall off- it shot off) of the trailer. I was going 55 down hill. I got the boat stopped without any more damage. The u-bolts and plate that attach the springs to the axel were fried. (when I got the boat stopped, they were on fire-went out quickly). 7:30 sun am in the middle of VA. Luckily I was within 5 miles of a TSC and AutoZone, both which were open. It took me about 5 hours, but eventually was able to make repairs and head home.
If I had to bid on the boat again, and I knew I would have to go through that, I would not bid!
Hope to have the boat in the water in 2-3 weeks. I will then go to my welder friend, we are installing a 2nd axle! |

Oh my god ... you could have killed someone ... for a prank !! it never ceases to amaze me the stupidity of some people .. You should call the hotel and see if the have a surveillance camera in the lot your boat was in. If they got that on tape, I'm sure the authorities would like to see it. _________________ R-TERN

what a story. were the bolts good and secure on original departure?
oddly lug bolts can work loose. the wheel on my baler once just fell off (thankfully at 1 mph it did not exactly shoot off) but dropped 3 tons of machinery to the ground ... a unique misery in itself. i had never checked their security throughout the years.
the surveillence tape is an excellent idea. _________________ Mike Hayden
