Strangely enough, that was tried in Kansas in the 1870's. The craft was your basic prairie schooner equipped with what amounts to a large sprit rig. And it worked! . . . . sorta . . . . The inventor/promoter was killed when he encountered a strong quartering wind and a deep not quartering gully at the same moment in time.
