Gettin' close on your survey... Know you're excited and what better time to buy a boat, for excitement anyway, then the BEGINNING of the season (though your season stretches on and on and...). Looks to be a very nice example!
A full report of first sail with your own take on the comparison/contrast with RUM is expected, of course. Congratulations if all goes through Wed.

Kelly:
Set for all day tomorrow.
Sea trial first, and then on the hard.
Will file a full report w/pics now that I've finally got the hang of it.
Having great difficulty thinking about the RUM going away.
Can't imagine not being able to jump on her and catch a quick sunset.
Maybe I'll figure a way to keep her in the fleet.
We'll see.

Anybody out there know anything about Fancor roller reefers?
The Harken equipment as advertised turned out to be Fancor.
All I can say is it turns.
More to come later. _________________ G Corbino

The Facnor continuous line furling for things like the Code 0 etc is getting huge raves and is on big name racing & single-hand solutions. They make high quality stuff, especially that type solution. I dont have as much knowledge of their stock drum furling rigs but do know it's a good company. I remember reading about them and seeing their super light/minimalist rigs in action while following ocean racing over the last several years. Seems they've been building regular drum furlers for a while. _________________ Kelly Holsten abstrait

Thanks Kelly.
The portion of the furler that's actually installed on the boat looks ok for having been there for 20 years. Still turns freely, but then it's not under load. I need parts information to see if I can make a whole working system, or have to trash and start over. I'll be calling Charleston Spars this morning.
The boat is in very good shape except for the old sails and rigging and some alignment issues in the engine shaft area. Sound structure and very very clean. Sails as well as you can with 20 year old sails. Looks like the fleet will grow.
More later, I have to go earn money to be able to take on this new project.

Facnor is supposed to be one of the sturdiest units available, at least the new ones. Roger at Nance and Underwood, Rigging and Sails, is our Facnor guy in Lauderdale, and a good friend. Just Holler if you need a hand sourcing out parts or something. He literally has a hardware U-Pull It lot of old gear in his warehouse if it is a discontinued model. _________________ Jake LaRue

Well the Safety Harbor flotilla just grew by 28.5 feet.
Here is a shot of the esteemed crew of "Los Tres Capitanos" discussing the fine art of navigating thier sailing companion [behind the lens] into bigger boat headaches.
Also a shot of the Boca Grande light house as the boat, soon not to be known as Liberte, heads out into the Gulf for the hop up to Safety Harbor.
More to come, but right now I'm dealing with something I naver had on the RUM, water in the bilge.

looks great gerard. i'd love to see some more pictures as you have time. i have no cockpit table. do you like it?
salt or fresh water in the bilge? enchanté is dry all the time as long as the drive shaft is in place. you can expect the same. _________________ Mike Hayden

Have a few more on a disk one of the guys took. When I find it I'll post.
As to leak water it's hard to tell. Best guess is the "dirpless" box [that isn't] is the major culprit. She is bone dry sitting at the dock. The search last night could not identify any other prime suspects.
Table was part of a deal I cut with the seller for not fixing the mast head wind instrument. The table is much more useful to me than some 20 year old electronics trying the tell me where the wind is blowing and how hard. The back of my neck and yarn on the shrouds has worked all my life, saw no need to change now.
Man this boat is big!

Classic shot!
How did you enjoy the sail? Any more thoughts between sailing the two since Rum is so fresh in memory?

Kelly:
Those guys are a hoot, and I couldn't have asked for a more talented set of companions for a maiden voyage.
As for the pure sailing, well there was not that much of it. Only a couple hours in Charlotte Harbor, about 3 in the Gulf and less than one in the Bay. All else was motor sailing. A combination of no wind and Father's Day schedules meant we pushed the progress with a goal of never staying under 5 kts for long.
Sailing a wheel 28 compared to my RUM is like night and day to me. It's a totally different feel. I must admit that I was much more comfortable out in the Gulf when the roll clouds from the t boomers passed over than I would have been on the 235. And when you do 6 on this thing the sensation of speed is so much less than on the RUM. I can't do a fair comparison of true speed potential as the old rags on the 285 jaundice my perspective, but she obviously has higher potential. We'll see once the new sails arrive. As I gain experience I'll try to relate my findings.
Right now the energy is focused in getting all of the systems up to the standards of the RUM, and that may take all summer. A very time and money consuming challenge.
