the nice diesel engine is a huge plus in the boat, so maybe good engine logs and history, hours, etc. there is a pan under the engine you can check for evidence of stains and standing oil. touching the underside of the engine should leave you with a clean hand. i know i'm on my second water pump, something the PO did.

fresh water pump should pump up and not run until a spigot is opened, then cut off promptly after the system pressurizes. i ended up replacing/upgrading mine.

gel coat cracks or moisture readings specially between the primary winches, along and up to the forward end of the genoa tracks.

moisture in the rudder (most have some. i would not worry too much but it might help leverage the price).

integrity of the above waterline through-hull behind the oven. it's marlon or what ever that plastic stuff is. it gets a lot of sun.

emergency tiller present and accounted for (carl mentioned he didn't get one)

and then all the normal stuff.

Got any thoughts on the $29.9k price?
From what I've seen of the market it seems fairly high. And most of the boats are fresh water locations to boot.

the boat should be bristol for 30k and they are rare. there are some out there that command that price, don't know if this is one of them. the ones i have seen for $20k have been nothing i would be interested in. so somewhere in the middle lies the sweet spot.

i will say the details look nice and she sure looks clean. and a folding prop! very nice. those bad boys are expensive.

I agree with Mike about the price. For 29,000 this boat better be perfect. I got my boat for 22k and by my thinking that gives me 7,000 dollars to spend on goodies. Of course, I'm probably not going to spend all that this year, but I will be on the water in a new/used boat for not much more (I hope) than I'll get when I sell Trekka and the pickup truck.

The engine seems to be the wild card, but with the inland boats I don't think it generally gets much use.

I just got back from Punta Gorda where the Fla boat is berthed.
As you would expect with a very nice lady as its skipper, it is very very clean.
Even the engine compartment was better than I have seen on any used boat I've been aboard. Cleanliness is obviously the boats strong point. Apparently everything on board is original 19 year old equipment. That includes sails, engine, standing and running rigging, etc. All appear to be in working order though.

I was amazed by the access to the engine from all sides. I question if you can actually use the aft stateroom with the engine running because of the amount of noise and heat. Do you all have any thoughts on that point?

i have not spent a lot of time in the aft berth while motoring since i'm normally on the helm except to fetch something. i don't remember noticing any excessive heat; but of course the engine noise is obvious.

the crew has spent considerable time in the salon and other places below during extended motoring. no particular complaints although everyone does enjoy the return to silence when sailing begins again.

did you note the integrity of the anechoic padding on the inside surface of each removable panel and throughout the engine room? there is a big difference in db level with an open vrs closed panel, in no small part due to the padding.

i think i'd characterize the engine noise as pretty average.

did you sail it? if so, what were your impressions compared to the 235?

My concern is more curiosity since I single hand and won't fine myself in the situation much.

No I didn't sail her, I was there to do a detail inspection to see what I thought needed to be replaced before I made an offer.

Minimum replacements on the list are sails, running rigging, auto helm, and diesel service. No small sum, but the old stuff is nothing I want to rely on out in the Gulf.

I did note that the spreader brackets looked suspiciously like what I replaced on the Run. Have you heard of any similar problems on the 285?

no, i have not, but it is probably worth pondering. i have to go up to fix my windex and plan to look at my spreaders carefully and take a few pictures.

Gerard, did you ever resolve the mast clearance issue? The last I heard, it was right at the max for you to make it under the bridge. Did you get the exact figure?

I'd rather have access to the engine from all sides with a bit more noise than terrible access and less. Nothing worse than being hundreds of miles away from anything and not being able to easily access for a fix, even if it's a simple bang on the starter, screwdriver bridge, or a change of the belt.

as gerard probably noticed, the transmission, coupling and drive shaft are also nicely accessible. very good layout on beneteau's part.

You can add another layer of insulation to those panels and the compartment which will drop the sound level considerably from what it currently is. I know of several cases where this was done and it had impressive results.

Mike I took some shots from the deck, but the resolution in good enough only to raise a question. I look forward to what you find up the mast.

Kelly, all I could do is tape the mast and then plumb and level to the water. Not exact, but clearly in the 40=' range like the scantlings convert to, rather than the 38 in the flier.

There are a couple of boats up here in Safety Harbor that exceed 40 and just play the tides when they head south. I think the 285 will clear at anything other that MHW.

Just got a helpful e-mail from Paul Hawrylyshyn alerting me to another 285 for sale just down the road in Port Charlotte. This is getting to complicated.

I have removed painted-on names done in oil-based paint with EZ-Off oven cleaner. Use only the original formula in the yellow can; it is mostly lye, I think, so wear good gloves and maybe eye protection. What worked for me was to spray it liberally on the lettering, wait a while (maybe 5 minutes) then scrape off with a plastic putty knife, such as those sold for use with epoxy putty, bondo, etc. Rinse well with water, re-apply EZ-off, re-scrape, as needed. I finished up a few little remnants with a careful shave with a very sharp paint scraper and sanding as needed to remove the "shadow" left by the old name.
