December
3, 2005 - Audrey and I went for a daysail off Wrightsville Beach,
NC in relatively light winds and seas. Wind was probably in
the 8-10knt range give or take. The temps were around the
upper 50s but it was nice enough to head out. Andy Weaver
had his digital camera and took about 30 seconds of movie in fairly
low rez, this from his C&C 30. Audrey had dipped down
below to get replenish the beers and get a hat. The video
is a bit disappointing and the conditions far from ideal but it
was a day out on the water. Nice to have some sound of the
wind along. This was surely not particular fast, however.
The thing that made THIS day but not pictures was the sighting of
what we now think was a Right Whale over 45 ft long based
on the fluke size. The wind had totally backed off and the
whale actually surfaced a boat length or so behind is. It
was an amazing sight and one none of us will forget. There
are only 350 or so of these great creatures left. It surfaced
a quite a few times and finally disappeared with one last dive,
the full tail far up in the air, only to submerge without a trace..
We hope to get some better movies in the coming weeks.
